Shows to Binge Watch This Summer

Okay, summer has been here long enough that if you’re like me and most of my friends then you may or may not be running out of ideas of things to do to keep entertained. Let’s be honest, we all probably should get a job or some new hobbies but if you enjoy ending your day watching a good show (or three), here are a few of my suggestions!

This list is in no particular order other than the order I thought them up in. I have no idea how to even begin to rank these shows.

Queer Eye

If you haven’t started watching Queer Eye yet, where have you been for the last two years? Okay, I kid, but still. I wasn’t one of the first to hop on the Queer Eye bandwagon, but after a couple of episodes I was hooked. Each episode the Fab 5 take on a new hero and help them discover the best versions of themselves. Whether or not you like reality TV it’s always a very heartwarming show and inspires me to be kind to myself and love others.

New Girl

If you want something light-hearted and wacky with a cast you will fall in love with, then New Girl is my go-to. For years I had people telling me I reminded them of Jessica Day (which might be linked to the fact that I held a position called the “Good News Fairy” for about three years – but that’s for another blog post) and had never known what they were talking about. I remember starting this show it felt kind of awkward initially, but it only gets better from there. I watched the entire series with my BFFs this year and we are BIG fans.

Chuck

This is the show I will always recommend as my all-time favorite show. Nothing will ever reach the level this show has reached in my heart. Whenever I describe it to people I tell them it’s the perfect combination of action, comedy, and romance. You will fall in love with the cast. I’m beginning to realize the cast of a show is a BIG factor in determining whether or not I will love it. Zachary Levi (you may recognize him from Shazam) was made to play Chuck and is so endearing. I think this is the only series where I have seen all of it almost three times.

The Resident

This was the last series I finished watching and may I just say I am OBSESSED. First of all, you will fall in love with Dr. Conrad Hawkins. Just trust me on this one. But beyond that, the show is so well done. I’m not typically a big fan of hospital shows (I hate seeing blood & surgery which makes enjoying them hard!), however, this show is more than just patients and doctors. This show sheds light on some of the less flattering parts of the medical system, and shows young doctors who are willing to put their jobs on the line to bring about change. The character development is beautiful, and every episode leaves you wanting more.

Supernatural

This recommendation seems so random mixed in with all of these others, but I love Supernatural. I started watching this show because I enjoyed seeing Jared Padalecki in Gilmore Girls and wanted to see him in other roles. I had no idea I would end up watching about five seasons of this in a few months! Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki play brothers who end up hunting demons and monsters every episodes. Sounds super fun, right? Let me just say, this would not usually be my cup of tea. I don’t know what it is, but this show gets you hooked. If you don’t believe me, they’re about to finish up the series on season 15 this year!

Cheers

I think I’m throwing this show in as a wild card option. Not everyone is going to love it, but I think some of you may be surprised. Cheers is set in a Boston bar and most of the show takes place there. Their humor is quick and lively. Young Ted Danson plays former baseball stud, Sam Malone who owns the bar and is really funny. I never finished this series but I always enjoyed watching an episode or two over dinner when I wanted to watch something light.

Brooklyn 99

I’m new to the B99 world, but I’m finding that the people who love Brooklyn, LOVE Brooklyn. Some of you may remember this show from all of the #SaveB99 tweets last year, or you may have been on board all along. This show gets me every time with the most hilarious cold opens and a cast that keeps you coming back. I began watching this show after finals this spring and watched about two seasons in under a week. I went TOO hard so I had to take a break, but it is definitely worth the watch.

Gilmore Girls

Ah, what a classic. If you haven’t already seen Gilmore Girls before I would encourage you to check it out. You get to watch Rory Gilmore grow up throughout the series along with her mom, Lorelai. Their banter is witty and fast-paced and always fun to watch. You’ll fall in love with them and their quaint little town, Stars Hollow. I watched this show with my mom, and would totally recommend it if you’re looking for a show to enjoy together!

Stranger Things

Again, if you haven’t seen this show yet, where have you been? The characters are incredible! The music is perfect! The cinematography is everything we want and more. I don’t want to describe this show to you. If you haven’t seen it then you need to go watch it on Netflix like yesterday!

John Mulaney: Kid Gorgeous at Radio City

Okay, this is not a series. But I also wouldn’t consider it a movie? Kid Gorgeous is comedian, John Mulaney’s latest show and it is hilarious. I’ve seen it about three times at this point because it’s a fun one to watch with friends (because then you all know the funny jokes and automatically have some great inside jokes). My friends and I really enjoy his humor, and there’s usually not a ton of profanity which I appreciate.

Is this GIF bad? Maybe! But, it’s still funny!

These have been some of my favorite shows over the past couple years, but I’m always looking for new suggestions! Let me know in the comments what your favorite show to binge-watch is!
